Background of the Study
Over time, pragmatic markers—words or expressions that organize discourse—have evolved in Nigerian indigenous languages. Diachronic studies reveal that these markers not only signal politeness, emphasis, or transitions but also reflect shifting social norms and communication contexts. Historically, traditional societies used specific markers rooted in local cultural practices. However, with increased urbanization and digital communication, new pragmatic strategies have emerged, leading to both retention and innovation across generations (Adeleke, 2023). Studies show that languages such as Yoruba, Igbo, and Hausa incorporate pragmatic markers that differ between rural and urban settings, influenced by language contact and media exposure (Okoro, 2024). A comparative analysis across different historical periods reveals that pragmatic markers adapt to changing social roles and technological influences. This research will employ corpus analysis and sociolinguistic interviews to trace these diachronic shifts, documenting how modernization and interethnic contact have redefined discourse strategies in Nigerian indigenous languages (Nwachukwu, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite their importance in communication, diachronic changes in pragmatic markers among Nigerian indigenous languages remain underexplored. Many studies focus on phonological and syntactic evolution, with little attention given to the pragmatic level. This lack of research limits our understanding of how shifting social contexts and technology impact discourse. Inadequate corpus data for historical language forms further hampers detailed analysis (Adeleke, 2023). Consequently, policymakers and educators have limited insight into the evolving nature of pragmatic expressions in indigenous languages, affecting language preservation efforts (Okoro, 2024).
